Welcome to the Colorado Sail and Yacht Club (CSYC) that sails on Chatfield Reservoir located at Chatfield State Park! Sailing season will begin in just a few months, and we are looking forward to another great year of sailing, racing, and social events.
Please note…due to the COVID-19 virus many of our boat arrangements and social events in 2021 will likely need to be curtailed again due to social distancing concerns.
If you’re a new to sailing you can learn-to-sail through two organizations that partner with CSYC:
Colorado Watersports (www.coloradowatersports.com) is located in Roxborough Cove and rents 14’ Topaz dinghies to interested sailors of all ages.
Victoria Sailing School (www.victoriasailingschool.com) is located at the Chatfield Marina and offers American Sailing Association (ASA) sailing courses, ranging from beginner to advanced, on their fleet of J22 and J30 keelboats. These keelboats are also available for rent through their Why-Buy Program and can be raced in Club races on Wednesday evenings.
Sailing Chatfield offers an experience to enjoy a pleasant afternoon, or beautiful evening of being on the water with friends. If you want to try your hand at racing, we offer multiple opportunities to participate:
Dinghy races will be held on Tuesday evenings at 6:00PM beginning May 25, 2021 in Roxborough Cove, a well protected area of the lake where you can become comfortable with your skills. Bring your own dinghy or rent (in-advance) a ~1~2 person 14’ Topaz dinghy from Colorado Watersports. Contact Betsy Gutknecht, dinghysailing@csyc.org or Dean Lenz, vice.commodore@csyc.org for information.
Keelboat races will be held on Wednesday evenings beginning April 21, 2021 on the lake. First start is at 6:30PM. The best way to find a crew position on a keelboat is to place an advertisement on our website under the tab “Classified”. Also, consider coming to Crew Practices on selected Monday nights beginning at 5:30PM on May 10, 2021. Meet our skippers and crew, become familiar with the boats they race, and possibly be invited to crew on Wednesday evenings. Following Wednesday night racing, join us on the docks for burgers and drinks. Contact Gary Simon, commodore@csyc.org or Dean Lenz vice.commodore@csyc.org for information.
Centerboard races are also held on Wednesdays in conjunction with the keel boats. A centerboard boat is trailerable, can carry 2-4 people, and a good option when summer and winter storage availability is a concern. This year, we are excited to have a new fleet of 19’ Flying Scot centerboard boats forming in the Club. Contact Ken Ross (719-447-5658) for more information and help in locating an available boat.
If you want to own a boat, Club members are more than willing to offer advice on what to buy, where to buy and how to secure summer slip and/or storage and winter storage near the lake. Feel free to contact one of our members listed above to learn how to enjoy the life-long sport of sailing
Lastly, view our full calendar of events for 2021 on our website homepage (www.csyc.org/calendar). See you on the water!
