Get Ready for Monday Night Beer Can Racing!

April 21, 2022 by Dean Lenz

INTRODUCING CSYC MONDAY NIGHT BEER CAN RACING

We are excited to add an additional night of racing to the 2022 CSYC schedule. It is an informal night of racing to tune up with your crew, break in your new crew, getting to try out new positions for the first time or even sailing on a different boat to learn how they sail. We want to enable new sailors, so be willing to take someone new on board from time to time. Who knows, you may find that next ringer!

Two Mondays each month, we will set up a course, run a committee boat, and start a race that is just for fun. The winner, as determined by random criteria, will win a 6 pack of beer. The criteria will be announced at the beginning of the race. Examples of “winning” could be the 1st to cross the line after completing a 720, the 3rd to cross or even the last boat to cross. The intent is to focus on fun while learning in a relaxed environment. We must then meet on the docks to help the winner drink it while snacking on something simple like chips and dip.

The first Monday of Beer can racing will be May 9th. We will set up one course and have a single start time of 6:30. Crews can race as relaxed or as determined as they would like. We will record the nights’ finish in order with no correction for handicap. This is not a series so just make as many races as you can.

In addition to racing, we will take the opportunity to do some familiarization of the committee boat by practicing the duties and learn the responsibilities of the race committee. We are asking that all new comers, those that are nervous or just need a refresher to sign up for the Monday night RC duty. It is a great time to hone those skills and be ready for the real competition on Wednesday nights.

We still must follow the rules of racing, but this is a chance to hail other boats to either learn or offer advise during the race. There will be no protest hearings. If you fouled another boat, it is a good opportunity to practice your 720’s or your 360 if you hit a mark.

Watch for more details but mark your calendar for May 9th to join us in the first Beer can race of the season! Check our website calendar for additional Monday night crew practice races.

Make it a fun learning experience for everyone on your crew and enjoy the comradery with your fellow sailors.

See you on the water-
Dean
